Celiac Disease is a Risk Factor for Schizophrenia
Celiac disease is preceded by gluten sensitivity, which amounts to a genetic inability to cleave the gluten molecules so that they go into the bloodstream whole when the gut lining becomes perforated by disease.​ These molecules fit in receptors of the brain causing disfunction.

Uric Acid Levels Implicated in Bipolar Disorder and Depression
Individuals with major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder have been shown to have high uric acid levels in the blood. These levels affect the activity of a neurotransmitter in the brain called adenosine, which helps regulate how excitable brain cells are.

Viral Infections Can Lead to Psychosis
Viral infections are historically associated with causing psychosis and other neuropsychiatric disorders. The book and movie "Brain on Fire" chronicles the experience of a young New York Times reporter who experienced psychosis after a viral infection. It took replacing an enzyme which the infection had depleted in her body to take her out of the psychiatric ward. Different infections can cause a depletion in essential enzymes and nutrients which can cause extreme mental issues long term if not addressed and replenished. It's an easy and effective fix, but rare is the doctor that looks for it since the reflex is to prescribe drugs.
